Timber Trials in a tropical DRY Zone

Timber Tree Planting Trials
Timber Tree Planting Trials

Xanthin's timber trials centre on Australian species. Species from tropical dry schlerophyl forest and tropical rainforest are featured.

Average annual Rainfall at Xanthin is 800 mm [32 inches]. Supplementary watering is utilized. Plantings are mixed and intense. Thinning has taken place. Age ranges from twelve (12) years back to just planted.

A special 'demonstration plot' contains a range of species from contrasting forest types growing under the same conditions.

Recently "African Mahogany" trials have been introduced. Seeds have been acquired from various provenances in the search for better timber forms. Homeland country/climate of the African Mahogany is similar to the Mareeba /Dimbulah area.

XANTHIN has been trialing timber tree plantings for the last 10 years.

Black Wasp
The Black Wasp is one of many, many insects supported by the 'organic environment'. The young of this insect are carnivorous, keeping pest insects in balance.

Tropical Grevilleas

Xanthin has over fifty (50) varieties of tropical grevilleas growing.

Most are hybrid cultivars. Some of these have been specially acquired and are not regularly found in nurseries of north Queensland.

Many original pure parent species can also be seen along with naturally occurring prostrate forms of otherwise upright shrubs/trees.

The main flowering period is from May to September.
